Renowned Sindhi Author

Mohan Gehani

One of the last surviving figures of the original pioneering group of the SINDHIYAT MOVEMENT,  Mohan Gehani, is an eminent translator, research scholar, essayist, playwright and poet. He is a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award, Saeen G.M. Sayed Memorial Award and A.J. Uttam and Sundri Uttamchandani Award for Lifetime Achievement, among others.

Having dedicated his life to the Sindhi heritage, he has been actively working towards preserving the Sindhi language, culture and history through his writings. With more than 15 published works in both English and Sindhi languages, he hopes his work helps to strengthen the common bond that connects all that find roots in the great land of Sindh – the emotion known as “Sindhiyat”.

His Achievements

Born in 1938, Mohan Gehani, belongs to a select community of writers that have lived through the Partition of India and thus, have roots that run deeper and into more diverse cultures. He played an active role in the campaign to introduce Sindhi Language in the Eight Schedule of the Constitution of India.

He has also been a recipient of various awards, including the Sahitya Academy Award in 2011 and the Saeen G.M. Sayed Memorial Award from the World Sindhi Council in London. He has also received awards for his contributions to Sindhi Literature from the Council of Promotion of Sindhi Language and the Akhil Bharat Sindhi Boli Ain Sahit Sabha. He has also been a member of the Sindhi Advisory Board For Sahitya Academy, New Delhi from 2007 to 2012.
